Jinja is a town on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, at the point where the Nile leaves the lake and begins its long journey north. It has become Uganda's adventure capital, known above all for white-water rafting.
Rafting trips run for first-timers and experienced paddlers, and calmer options include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and sunset cruises to the source of the Nile. It is a good change of pace from game drives and forest treks.
Jinja is about 2-2.5 hours east of Kampala, so it fits easily at the start or end of a Uganda itinerary.
The Nile here is wide and fast, with islands, forested banks and rapids downstream of the dams. The town has wide colonial-era streets and views over the lake.
Jinja is about the river rather than big game, though birdlife along the banks is good.
