Best Time to Visit Kenya for a Safari, Season by Season

There is no bad month for a safari in Kenya - the parks have resident wildlife all year. The right time for you depends on your priorities:

  • For the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara: roughly July to October.
  • For the easiest game viewing and dry roads: the dry seasons, roughly June to October and January to February.
  • For lower prices and fewer vehicles: the green season, especially the long rains (roughly April to May) and the shoulder months either side.

Here is what each season is like.

June to October: the main dry season

The most popular time to visit. Grass is short, water is scarce and animals gather near rivers and waterholes, so they are easier to find. Roads are in their best condition. From around July, the migration herds usually arrive in the Masai Mara, with river crossings possible until about October.

Trade-offs: peak prices, especially July to September, and more vehicles at popular sightings. Book early.

November to mid-December: the short rains

Short, often afternoon showers bring the landscape back to green. Most itineraries are unaffected. It is a good-value time with fewer visitors.

Mid-December to February: the short dry season

Warm, mostly dry and very good for game viewing. The Christmas and New Year period is busy and priced as peak season; January and February are quieter. This is also a good time for northern parks such as Samburu.

March to May: the long rains

The wettest period, typically heaviest in April and May. Rain often falls in afternoon or evening downpours rather than all day, but some roads become muddy and some camps close. Prices are at their lowest, the scenery is very green and many animals have young.

Good for: budget travellers, photographers who like dramatic skies and anyone who dislikes crowds.

Park-by-park notes

  • Masai Mara: year-round resident game; migration usually July to October. See best time to visit the Masai Mara.
  • Amboseli: dry seasons concentrate elephants in the swamps. Kilimanjaro views are best early in the morning in any season.
  • Lake Nakuru: good all year; heavy rain can close some lakeshore tracks.
  • Samburu: dry seasons draw wildlife to the river.
  • Mount Kenya: the driest trekking windows are roughly mid-January to February and July to October.
  • The coast: hot all year; most rain falls between April and June.

Weather by region

Altitude matters as much as season. Nairobi and the highlands are mild with cold nights; the coast is hot and humid. Our Kenya weather guide explains what to pack for each area.

The bottom line

If the migration is your priority, plan for July to October and book well ahead. If you want value and quieter parks, consider November, early December, January to March or June. Whatever the month, you will see plenty - Kenya's resident wildlife does not go away.
