The classic place to stay in Samburu is a tented camp on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. The river is the reserve's lifeline, so elephants, baboons and other animals often pass in front of camp during the day. Options range from comfortable mid-range camps to luxury lodges, with fewer properties overall than in the Mara.
Riverside tented camps, mid-range to luxury
Lodges set back from the river with wider views
Camps linked to community conservancies around the reserve
Fewer visitors and a quieter feel than the southern parks
Good chances of wildlife sightings from camp
Hot days - a pool or shade at midday is welcome
Northern Kenya's dry-country wildlife, often combined with Mount Kenya or Laikipia.
Around 5-6 hours by road from Nairobi via Nanyuki, or about an hour by scheduled flight from Wilson Airport.
Best combined with other northern stops rather than added alone to a southern trip
Malaria-risk area - take medical advice
Ask camp staff about animal activity near your tent at night
