Mikumi National Park in southern Tanzania is the easiest safari to reach from Dar es Salaam, about 4-5 hours by road. It borders the much larger Nyerere (formerly Selous) ecosystem to the south.
The heart of the park is the Mkata floodplain, an open grassland where elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest graze within sight of the main road. Lion are present, and hippos gather in pools. It does not have the scale or the migration of the Serengeti, but it is much quieter, and a one- or two-night trip is realistic.
Mikumi suits travellers based in Dar es Salaam, people adding a short safari to a Zanzibar holiday, and anyone who prefers fewer vehicles.
Wide, flat floodplain grassland with scattered baobabs and acacias, surrounded by the Uluguru and Rubeho mountains. The main Dar es Salaam-Zambia highway crosses the park.
Plains game is easy to see on the floodplain, and the hippo pools are reliable. Lion are seen regularly, sometimes resting on termite mounds. In the miombo woodland on the park's edges, look for larger antelope such as eland.

Combine with hiking in the Udzungwa Mountains nearby
Mikumi feels uncrowded. Drives are relaxed, with good visibility on the open plain. Expect to hear traffic from the highway in some areas.
The dry season, roughly June to October, is best for game viewing. The wet season brings greener scenery and good birding but thicker vegetation.
