How Much Does a Kenya Safari Cost? What Drives the Price

Planning · By the Bush Camp Tours safari team, Nairobi · Updated 2 October 2026

There is no single price for a Kenya safari, because the same itinerary can be built very differently. A 3-day Masai Mara trip can be a camping safari in a shared vehicle or a private safari in a conservancy camp - same park, very different cost.

We do not publish a misleading "average" figure. Instead, here are the factors that actually decide the price, so you can choose where to spend and where to save.

1. Accommodation level

This is usually the biggest factor. Budget camping, mid-range tented camps and lodges, and luxury camps can differ hugely in nightly rate, while the game drives themselves are similar. Our camping vs lodge guide explains what you get at each level.

2. Private or shared

On a private safari, the vehicle and guide are yours; the cost is split only within your group. On a shared departure, you travel with other guests and split the costs, which lowers the price per person. Private trips are more flexible; shared trips are cheaper.

3. Group size

Vehicle and guide costs are fixed per vehicle, so a group of four pays less per person than a couple.

4. Season

July to October (migration season) and the Christmas and New Year period are peak times with the highest rates. The long rains, roughly April and May, are usually cheapest, and the shoulder months fall in between. See best time to visit Kenya.

5. Park and conservancy fees

Fees are set by park authorities and county governments, not by operators, and are usually charged per person per 24 hours. They add up on longer trips and when you visit several parks. Conservancies charge their own fees, which fund conservation and local landowners.

6. Driving vs flying

Road safaris in a 4x4 are the most economical. Scheduled light-aircraft flights to the Mara or Samburu save time but add cost.

7. Trip length and number of parks

More days mean more nights, fees and vehicle days. Visiting fewer parks for longer can be better value than racing between many.

Where to save, and where not to

  • Save: on accommodation level, by travelling in the shoulder season, or by joining a shared departure.
  • Don't cut: the number of days in the park. A 3-day trip gives you far more than a 2-day trip for one extra night.

The bottom line

The same route can suit very different budgets. Decide your accommodation level and private-or-shared preference first; those two choices set most of the price.
